Since its completion through Dallas in 1967, Interstate 35E has seen the surrounding population double, causing heavy traffic for daily commuters. Currently, the intersection of I-30 and I-35E is the 17th most congested roadway in the country with over 400,000 drivers every weekday. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has commissioned the Horseshoe project, aptly named for its U shape, to relieve traffic congestion, enhance safety, and improve mobility through downtown Dallas and Dallas’ central business district. The Horseshoe project will begin initial construction in six sections; along the frontage road traveling eastbound on I-30 between Sylvan and Beckley Avenue, bridges crossing the Trinity River along I-30, the exit ramp and frontage road for eastbound I-30 and northbound I-35E the Commerce street going into downtown Dallas, the collector-distributor road westbound on I-30 between Harwood Street and Lamar Street, the main lane and frontage road bridge outside of existing bridges traveling both northbound and southbound on I-35E, and the frontage road on northbound I-35E between Eighth Street and Colorado Boulevard. The first phases of the $798 million design-build roadway construction project will focus on expansion, repaving, and addition of new bridges and roadways on frontage roads and bridge areas outside existing bridges. The Horseshoe project began in April 2013 and is expected to end in early 2017.
